Foundations of Special Education

This course introduces students to the field of early childhood education, with a focus on developmentally appropriate practice, inclusive learning environments, and the foundational knowledge and skills required of early childhood professionals. Students will explore major developmental milestones from birth through age eight, the historical and policy contexts that shape early education today, and the ethical responsibilities educators hold toward children, families, and communities. Through readings, reflections, and applied assignments, students will examine how to support diverse learners, build respectful partnerships with families, and develop their personal teaching philosophy. The course culminates in a professional reflection and philosophy statement, preparing students to enter the field as intentional, responsive, and equity-minded educators.
