Course Description:

This hands-on six-week course provides students with an understanding of the current import regulations of the United States, with specific emphasis on compliance determination with the Customs Regulations of the United States and use of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States of America.

Course Credit: 3 Credit Hours

Major Course Topics & Course Outcomes

As a result of the group and individual activities included in this course, the student will acquire the following knowledge and skills that can be applied to the workplace:

Customs Regulations of the U.S.

  • Develop a working knowledge of the customs regulation.

U.S. Customs Service

  • Recognize the responsibility of the U.S. Customs Service in regulating the flow of goods into the United States.

Harmonized Tariff Schedule

  • Distinguish the harmonized numbering system used to classify goods.
  • Understand the General Rules of Interpretation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.

Tariff Quotas

  • Discuss how and why quotas are established.

Goods Entry Process

  • Determine the need for an Entry Process for receiving the flow of goods into a country.

Protest Procedures

  • Identify how to redress problems that occur in the processing of importing goods into the United States.

Embargo Implications

  • Describe problems caused when regulations are not adhered to.

Organization of Customs Regulations

  • Navigate the U.S. Customs Service regulations.

Free Trade Agreements

  • Examine special provisions under various U.S. Free Trade Agreements.
