Introduction to Physical Science

Course Description:

In this survey course, the world around us is explored to understand the physical properties of objects and their relationship to the universe. The general laws and theories of science form the basis for the exploration process that examines the physical world around us and the universe that surrounds us.

Course Credit: 3 Credit Hours

As a result of the group and individual activities included in this course, the student will acquire the following knowledge and skills that can be applied to the workplace:

Objects and Properties

  • Determine the physical aspects of objects
  • Understand how properties of objects are defined and quantified
  • Identify how measurement systems are used to define properties
  • Interpret how relationships are the basis of laws and principles
  • Recognize how models and theories are used to define the relationships of laws and principles

Laws of Motion

  • Discuss the laws of motion
  • Understand Newton’s Law of Gravitation

Energy

  • Comprehend the concept of energy
  • Distinguish the concept of potential energy, energy flow, energy form and conversion
  • Identify kinetic molecular theory and how it relates to particles.
  • Understand thermometers work
  • Explain the concept of heat and energy transfer

Electricity and Light

  • Examine the concepts of Electricity
  • Determine sources of Light

Atomic Structure

  • Break down the parts of an atom
  • Discuss Bohr’s Theory of the Atomic model
  • Recognize the difference between Bohr’s Theory and the Quantum Mechanics model

Compounds and Chemical

  • Examine the concept of compounds as they naturally occur
  • Discuss chemical bonds

Universe, Solar System, Earth

  • Understand the concept of a light year
  • Identify the attributes of a Star
  • Differentiate Planets, Moons, and other bodies in the Solar System
  • Examine the Shape and size of Earth
  • Review the concepts of revolution and rotation

Rocks and Minerals

  • Discuss the Physical properties of solid earth materials

Earth’s Surface         

  • Classify the earth’s internal structure
  • Understand why the earth has a magnetic field
  • Break down the principles behind plate tectonics

Geologic Time

  • Recognize the forces that shape and change the surface of the earth over time
