Organizational Behavior

Course Description:
This course examines the topic of organizational behavior from the perspective of the practicing manager. It focuses on understanding group and individual behavior and how it impacts the organization as critical factors in developing successful communication, motivation, leadership, culture, and a working organizational structure. This course emphasizes the importance of assessing internal and external human factors impacting the organization.

Organizational Behavior and the Business Environment
- Recognize management functions, roles, and skills
- Identify some of the challenges of globalization in Organizational Behavior
- Examine how workforce diversity differs from globalization
- Break down the communication process and barriers to effective communication
- Discuss the issues that exist with cross-cultural communication in a global environment
- Define Organizational Cultureand its characteristics
- Characterize the function that culture performs in an organization
- Give Examples of how culture is created and sustained in the organization
- Describe motivational theories and how they apply to different types of workers
- Discuss MBO and how it is applied in the workplace
Individual Behavior
- Classify biographical characteristics of individuals
- Compare and contrast the three theories of learning

Group Behavior
- Express the five-stage development model of group formation
- Understand how group “norms” are essential to group development
- Contrast group decision-making versus individual decision-making strengths/weaknesses
- Define groupthink and groupshift and how it impacts a groups decision-making ability.
- Express how managers impact group performance and satisfaction
- Identify the difference between groups and teams
- Recognize how teams benefit both employees and organizations
Leadership, Power and Politics
- Compare leadership versus management
- Differentiate between leaders that are transactional versus transformational leaders
- Express how trust is built by leaders and understand the five dimensions of trust.

- Define and discuss the four bases of power and seven power tactics
- Describe the what stimulates the use of political tactics

Organizational Change and Stress Management
- Understand what forces act as a stimulant to change
- Compare first-order and second-order change in an organization
- Discuss resistance to change and its impact on the organization

- Define the learning organization and its advantages

Human Resources
- Identify the factors involved in employee selection
- Describe the impact of training and development on the organization
